Venice, Italy

Venice

We have all seen the sights of Venice, Italy....The Tourist, The Italian Job, Casino Royale, and the list goes on. One could say, it is arguably one of the MOST fascinating cities in Italy. When walking through the streets and crossing canals, one can only wonder how in the world did they build this city, how has this city not washed away?!. The homes, sidewalks, and even the cemetery are all right up to the edge, LITERALLY. There is not another city like it (please try and name one, just one), and for now (because I am still traveling) it will remain one of my favorite, except...

...it is the most unfriendly cities in regard's to directions.

I would some what pride myself on making it thus far navigating throughout Italy, city streets, the metro, and the train system. They are all mildly intimidating but a little googling, and reading and its EASY breezy. However in Venice, it is not as easily done, as it is said. Yes there are water taxis and they work the same as the metro, linking you from one island or canal to another, that is easy. It is the walking from street to street, which is a very frustrating task (and it isn't my clumsy walking either). The streets aren't all marked, some of the names have changed but not according to the tourist maps, and a lot of the locals go by lefts, rights, canals and walkways...for instance, to get to Murano I was told to go outside, go right, take that stairway (mind you there are stairways EVERYWHERE in Venice), take a right, then go down two lefts and a mild right to the water, and there is a water taxi....hahahaha ok, right. Well what if it is a dead end left, does that count as one of the 'lefts' that I was suppose to count? Needless to say, after connecting to wifi and using google maps, I found my water taxi, and I had taken the WRONG (I am never wrong) stairway, and apparently missed a left somewhere.  If you get lost during the day or night, which I did at -both- times, it's perfectly ok because Venice is such a great city to get lost in, because there is a beautiful cathedral, venetian artifact, or just another postcard worthy picture of the canals.

When in Venice, Do Not Eat Pizza..can't believe I even said that.., just DON'T! But do have prosecco, fish and risotto. I have been eating foods in each city that they are known for regionally, so it makes sense that a city that is floating on the Adriatic Sea be known for fish. I went to this little restaurant late one night, after a storm came through, and had a seafood risotto. It was the real deal, fresh shrimp (with the heads on, ew) mussels, and squid. It was some of the best risotto I have ever had, and I had to make myself eat because the tomatoes here are to die for....and I of course stuffed myself on a appretivo of fresh bruschetta.

Point of this post...Venice should be on everyone's bucket list. Ciao!
